Monument Trail

(40.0 km)

Although this is called the Monument Trail you will also come across plenty of natural countryside along the way. Cycle through a patchwork of polders (the Wijdewormer) and old peat meadow areas (Oostzanerveld, Ilperveld, Wormerveld and Jisperveld).

At times, sharp geometric ditches and at others meandering streams define the landscape. Now and then a characteristic ribbon village pops up on the horizon where houses used to be built next to each other on the high dykes. In Jisp and Purmerend in particular there are a remarkably large number of monuments. Here you see the beautiful, opulent mansions, built in a stately, nineteenth-century style. In neighboring Wormer it is mainly the old warehouses that have been given monument status. Due to the location on the Zaan, the large ships of the last century sailed in here to unload their cargo. That cargo was first stored and then distributed across the country. Nowadays, the numerous square meters are used as homes, restaurants and cultural institutions.

Then diehards can pedal briskly on to junction 73 to gaze in wonder at De Zaanse Schans. A monumental living and working district of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with wooden windmills, barns, dwellings and museums. All constructed in unique Zaanse timber architecture and transferred here one by one starting in 1961.

How it works
You cycle the trail with the help of the so-called junction system. A junction is a uniquely numbered spot where two cycle paths cross each other. The trails in this book are set out on the basis of these numbers. The only thing you have to do is follow the numbers in the sequence in which they are presented. You can recognise the junctions by the green and white signs along the way.

How do I get there?
Public transport from Amsterdam CS. Busline 301 in the direction of Purmerend Overwhere or De Rijp. Get off at: Stadhuis Purmerend.

From the bus stop to the bicycle rental: Step off the bus and turn left. Follow the sign in the direction of the train station. The bicycle rental is here.
From the bicycle rental to the first junction: Cycle under the railway line and follow the signs in de direction of junction 25.
