Twiske Trail

(44.0 km)

This trail to the Twiske is not without risk since you will be cycling across a recreational area that offers all sorts of temptation. Beaches, endless playing fields and a delightful lake for swimming and sailing.

Just try and stay in the saddle…Fortunately, Twiske also has some fantastic and varied natural attractions that certainly offer the necessary distraction as you pedal the 39 kilometers of this trail: eye-catching meadows, flower-filled wooded areas and wide reed beds.

This trail begins behind Central Station in Amsterdam boat trip. On the far side the landscape becomes really green after about fifteen minutes cycling and once you have passed Landsmeer you enter a natural area of unparalleled beauty. From the dyke, that literally embraces the Twiske, there’s a great view. The Twiske itself is an old peat meadow area that was drained in the forties and fifties and even today still has its own (extraordinarily clean!) water management. The Stootersplas in the middle emerged when twelve million cubic meters of sand had to be taken for the
construction of the Coentunnel.…

How it works
You cycle the trail with the help of the so-called junction system. A junction is a uniquely numbered spot where two cycle paths cross each other. The trails in this book are set out on the basis of these numbers. The only thing you have to do is follow the numbers in the sequence in which they are presented. You can recognise the junctions by the green and white signs along the way.

You can rent a bike at Starbikes Rental.

From the bicycle rental to the first junction
Take a left turn and cycle in the direction of the station. At the end of the street turn right and cross the road. Turn left in the direction of the station again. Stop behind the station at the Buiksloterwegveer (ferry). Take the Buiksloterwegveer (ferry) and cross the IJ. Then follow the signs in the
direction of junction 36.
